Terms of use

Plain-language draft, not yet reviewed by an attorney. Effective October 26, 2026.

By using backupengineer.com (the "site"), you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.

1. Who we are

BackupEngineer is operated by a sole proprietor in Kansas, USA. Contact: hello@backupengineer.com.

2. Education only

The calculator, guides and data are general education. They are not engineering, electrical or other professional services, design, or inspection, and using the site does not create a professional relationship of any kind. The engineer behind this site is not a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). Results are planning estimates; have a licensed electrician size, wire and install anything connected to your home.

3. Safety

Follow your equipment manuals, your local electrical code and your utility's rules. Never backfeed a generator through a wall outlet; use a transfer switch or listed interlock installed by a licensed electrician. Run portable generators outdoors only, away from the house, and use carbon monoxide alarms. See our safety notes.

4. No warranty

To the extent permitted by law, the site and everything on it is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, including accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose, or that an estimate suits your home. Wattages vary by model, and the defaults are approximate.

5. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, BackupEngineer and its operator are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any purchase, installation or other decision you make based on the site. Our total liability for any claim related to the site is limited to $100. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.

6. Third-party links and affiliate relationships

Some links go to retailers, and some are paid affiliate links labeled "(paid link)" (see our affiliate disclosure). We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for their products, prices, specs, warranties or policies. Prices and specs change; check the seller before you buy.

7. Content and data license

The appliance default data at /data/appliance-defaults.json may be reused under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) license, with attribution to "BackupEngineer, https://backupengineer.com/calculator". The guides, page text and design are © 2026 BackupEngineer, all rights reserved; short quotes with a link back are welcome.

8. Acceptable use

Please don't use the site in a way that harms it or other users, such as automated scraping at a rate that degrades the site. Search engines and AI assistants are welcome to crawl and cite it as described in our robots.txt.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Kansas, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. To the extent permitted by law, any dispute will be heard in the state or federal courts serving Butler County, Kansas.

10. Changes
